The Beginning of a Coaching Journey
Back in 2016, when I began my journey as a coach, a client walked into my office with hesitation written all over his face. He was terrified of public speaking — not just nervous but paralyzed by fear.
The reason? A lifelong stammer that made it nearly impossible for him to say his own name confidently in front of others.
He described how, during introductions at meetings or events, he would freeze. Words got stuck in his throat and an awkward silence would fill the room. The shame, the judgmental stares and the self-doubt became his constant companions.
The Truth About Stammering
Here’s something many people don’t realize:
Stammering has nothing to do with intelligence or capability.
In my experience, stammering in public speaking often stems from:
Fear of judgment – Obsessing over what others might think
Overthinking – Trying to be “perfect” with every word creates pressure
Past experiences – A single bad moment can scar and paralyze
Breath control – Disrupted breathing affects speech rhythm
Reclaiming His Voice — The Coaching Process
When we began working together, I didn’t aim to “fix” him. Instead, we focused on helping him reclaim his voice through intentional steps.
🧘 What We Worked On:
✅ Breathing exercises to calm his nervous system
✅ Short, clear phrases to build confidence gradually
✅ Self-acceptance – understanding that perfection is not the goal
✅ Shifting focus from how he sounded to what he had to say
A Breakthrough Moment
Within weeks, he began participating in small meetings. Later, he presented confidently to his team.
Not long ago, he told me something powerful:
“I never thought I’d feel free from the fear of my own name. But today, I do.”
